Once owned by the wealthy Coward family, some 250 men and boys, some brought from the workhouses, were employed there. The mill was in continuous use until 1971, and remains largely unchanged to the present day, and is maintained as a working monument.
English Heritage purchased the abandoned mill in 1983, were the century old bobbin making process can be seen. The tour guides provide interesting 45 minute tours, with demonstrations for the benefit of tourists. The mill was powered by water from High Dam Tarn on Finsthwaite Heights.
