Walltown Crags

A particularly impressive section of Hadrian's Wall with panoramic views can be seen at Walltown Crags, standing less than a half-mile north of the Roman Army Museum (Carnovan) and lying just over the border into Northumberland. The wall at this point still stands to a considerable height, and snakes dramatically along the natural rocky defences of the Whin Sill. Turret 45a, which tops the hill, was once used as a lookout tower.

A former quarry cuts dramatically through the Wall and the underlying Whin Sill at Walltown. The site has been landscaped and developed as a recreational site with a network of paths and ponds. Facilities include parking, toilets, and refreshments. There is a short walk to Thirlwall Castle, which lies 1 km to the west
