Eden Ostrich World, well worth a visit, is an award winning attraction
of educational value. The centre is situated at the large village of Langwathby, which lies 5 miles north east of the town of Penrith.
Ostrich World is an exciting Farm Visitor Centre based at Langwathby Hall, a 230 acre working arable beef and sheep farm in Cumbria's scenic Eden Valley. The centre opened at Easter 1998 and within three months, the attraction had gained the Cumbria Tourist Board's prestigious Best Visitor Attraction in Cumbria Award (under 50,000 visitors).
The Centre boasts rare breeds of cattle, donkeys, outdoor pigs, goats, red deer, meerkats, zebras, porcupines, racoon dogs, ducks and geese. One of the main attractions is the magnificent African Black Ostrich. Visitors may observe the incubation of the eggs, which hatch on a daily basis from May to October.
The most unusual resident by far is a Zebra hybrid, zebra hybrids are a very rare species. The foal bears the unusual name of Pozee Tinkerbelle, and was born at the centre on 19th June 2001, at the height of the foot and mouth crisis. His mother, Tilly is a a shetland pony and his father, Bijou, a zebra.
Typically a zebra hybrid will have boldly striped legs, a clearly marked dorsal stripe, and varying degrees of striping on the face, neck, shoulders and body, usually being dark brown stripes over a varying degree of colours, depending on the colour of the mated equid.
Facilities include the Farmhouse Tea Room, which serves snacks and refreshmnents, the Hayloft Gallery, gift shop, adventure play area, maze, muddle-bugs, and Dino Cars, parking and toilets.
