Codale Tarn

OS Grid reference NY2908

Beautiful Codale Tarn, a shallow pool of around 6 feet (2 metres) deep, is situated on Grasmere Common, and lies in the shadows of Belles Knott. The tarn is situated two and a half miles from Grasmere and to the west of its larger neighbour, Easdale Tarn. The quiet tarn, which is situated at an elevation of 1,536 feet (468 metres) offers superb views of Helvellyn. Codale's beck runs down into Easedale Tarn and on to Grasmere.

The Tarn lies in a classic 'hanging valley' to the north-east of the main Langdale peaks. Codale Tarn be reached by taking the path up from Grasmere (via Easedale Tarn) or from Great Langdale (via Stickle Tarn), turning off the path between the two tarns at Belles Knott. Alternatively, a path leads down from the summit of Sergeant Man via Lang Crag.
