The hamlet of Skelwith Bridge, three miles from Grasmere, near the Wrynose Pass was once a centre for the slate quarrying industry, it consists of a cluster of stone buildings by a picturesque bridge spanning the River Brathay. Picnic benches are provided in an idyllic riverside setting.

A ford which once existed across the river lead to the growth of the village. The Kirkstone Galleries in the hamlet are suppliers of the local blue-green slate, hand crafted articles can be purchased from the shop and workshops by the River Rothay. There is also a stylish interior lifestyle store, Touchstone Interiors, situated on the banks of the river, with a cafe and a pleasant external riverside eating area.

A walk from Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater Village

Duration:-about an hour
Commencing at Skelwith Bridge (OS Grid ref-NY344034), take the path through the Kirkstone Galleries workyard and follow the path along the banks of the River Brathay to Skelwith Force. The force is a fifteen feet high waterfall where the combined waters of the River Brathay and Langdale Beck thrust a dramatic passage through the rocks.
Continue along the path through woodland which follows the course of the river. The path eventually opens out to broad open meadows, which offer superb views. Follow the path through to Elterwater lake, with the dramatic rugged profile of the Langdale Pikes as a backdrop. After leaving the lake, folow the path along the course of the Brathay to Elterwater village.
