Cark-in-Cartmel
The unspoilt and tranquil village of Cark-in-Cartmel lies near to Morecambe Bay.
The small village has two pubs, a village shop and a post office and is relatively unaffected by the high influx of tourism that can crowd the central areas of Lakeland.
In the 19th century, Cark-in-Cartmel was a mill village. The first mill in the village was a Corn Mill owned by nearby Cartmel Priory and a fulling mill. Various other water-powered mills followed.
Nearby Holker Hall , built by the Dukes of Devonshire, has been owned by the Cavendish family since the seventeenth century. The hall contains fine wood carvings, furniture and paintings, as well as magnificent gardens and grounds containing deer herds.
